Best Free Icon Websites for Web Design in 2026
Updated: April 2026
Icons can make a big difference in website design. They help visitors understand your content faster, make buttons and sections easier to scan, and give your website a more polished and professional look.
You can design custom icons yourself in Illustrator, Photoshop, or Figma, but in many cases it is faster and more practical to use a good free icon library. There are many high-quality icon websites available today, especially if you are looking for clean SVG icons for modern websites.
Below I have listed some of the best free icon websites for web design. Some are great for simple interface icons, while others are better for more detailed or decorative icons.
1. Iconfinder
Iconfinder is still one of the easiest websites to use when you quickly need to find an icon for a project. The search function works well and there is a large selection of both free and paid icons.
It is especially useful when you are looking for a specific subject, such as contact icons, payment icons, social media icons, or business-related icons.
Best for: quickly finding icons by topic.
2. Fontello
Fontello is a useful tool if you want to create a custom icon font. You can select only the icons you need and download them as a small icon font package.
Icon fonts are not always my first choice anymore, because SVG icons are often more flexible and better for modern websites. But Fontello can still be useful when you are working with older WordPress themes or projects that already use icon fonts.
Best for: creating lightweight custom icon fonts.
3. IcoMoon
IcoMoon is another strong option for creating icon fonts and managing custom icon sets. It has a clean interface and allows you to import, select, and export icons for your website.
For web designers, IcoMoon is especially helpful when you want full control over which icons are included in a project, instead of loading a large icon library with many icons you do not use.
Best for: custom icon sets and icon font management.
4. Iconmonstr
Iconmonstr is one of my favourite free icon websites for simple, clean, minimal icons. The icons are easy to use and the style is consistent, which is important when you want a website to feel professional.
It works very well for buttons, service sections, contact blocks, feature lists, and small visual elements throughout a website.
Best for: minimal icons for clean website designs.
5. Entypo
Entypo is a classic icon font with simple flat icons. It has been around for a long time and was used in many WordPress themes, including older theme frameworks.
It may not be the most modern option today, but it is still worth mentioning because many existing websites still use Entypo icons.
Best for: older websites and simple flat icon styles.
6. Heroicons
Heroicons is a modern set of hand-crafted SVG icons by the makers of Tailwind CSS. The icons are clean, professional, and work especially well for modern website interfaces.
Heroicons includes outline and solid styles, which makes it easy to keep your icon style consistent across a website. The icons are also available under the MIT license, which makes them easy to use in many projects.
Best for: modern UI icons and clean website interfaces.
7. Lucide Icons
Lucide is a large open-source icon library with lightweight SVG icons. The icons are clean, consistent, and easy to customise with CSS.
This is a very good option if you like thin line icons and want a modern, professional look. Lucide is especially useful for dashboards, service websites, SaaS websites, and modern WordPress layouts.
Best for: clean line icons and modern web design projects.
8. Font Awesome
Font Awesome is one of the most well-known icon libraries. It offers a large collection of icons, including a free version that is enough for many websites.
The main advantage of Font Awesome is that it is widely supported and easy to use. Many WordPress themes and plugins already support it, so it can be a practical choice when you want something familiar and reliable.
Best for: WordPress websites and general-purpose icons.
9. Google Material Icons
Google Material Icons is a large icon library based on Google’s Material Design system. The icons are simple, clear, and work well for user interface elements.
They are especially useful for common actions like search, menu, phone, email, location, arrows, downloads, and settings.
Best for: clear interface icons and common website actions.
10. Feather Icons
Feather Icons is a simple and elegant open-source icon set. The icons are lightweight and have a consistent line style.
Feather is a good option when you want a very clean and minimal design. It works well for websites that need subtle icons without making the design feel too busy.
Best for: minimal line icons and lightweight websites.
How to Choose the Right Icons for Your Website
When choosing icons for a website, try not to mix too many different styles. A common mistake is using one thick icon, one thin icon, one coloured icon, and one detailed illustration icon all on the same page. This can make the website feel messy.
Here are a few simple tips:
- Use one icon style throughout the website.
- Choose SVG icons where possible.
- Keep icons simple and easy to understand.
- Do not use icons just for decoration; they should support the content.
- Make sure icons are not too large or too small on mobile.
- Check the license before using icons in commercial projects.
SVG Icons vs Icon Fonts
For most modern websites, SVG icons are usually the better choice. They are sharp, scalable, easy to style, and you can often use only the icons you need.
Icon fonts can still be useful, especially in older WordPress themes or when a website already uses them. But if you are starting a new website today, I would usually choose SVG icons over icon fonts.
Final Thoughts
A good icon set can make your website easier to use and more visually appealing. The most important thing is not to use as many icons as possible, but to use the right icons in the right places.
For clean and modern website projects, I would personally start with Iconmonstr, Heroicons, Lucide, or Feather Icons. For WordPress projects, Font Awesome can also be a practical and reliable choice.
If you are improving an existing website, updating old icons is often a small design change that can make the whole website feel more modern.

Love fontello! Will have to use that also. There are some nice ones that go well with either Boostrap or Foundation of which both have their own set of icon-fonts.
Fontello is great, would surely recommend to check out Icomoon as well. It has a lot of the same icons as Fontello but you don’t have the hassle of the downloading the font.
